Montessori Bibliography Online

This database utilizes a few different standardized taxonomies with some minor modifications. For geographic locations the United Nations Geoscheme is employed; for subject terms the Library of Congress Subject Headings and Wikidata are employed. The search functionality is a very basic keyword search. Keywords are any word – geographic location (i.e., country, region, continent) , subject, topic, person, culture, etc. – that is located within the entries (i.e., title, author, abstract, tags/keywords). For more details related to geography and subject terminology please see the respective tabs. Another version of the Montessori Bibliography Online is available at the University of Kansas Center for Montessori Research, at https://montessoribib.ku.edu. The version hosted at the University of Kansas is regularly updated and includes more robust search and sort functionalities. Additionally, this article by Joel Parham describes details related to this project.
For geographic location names, this database utilizes the United Nations Geoscheme. This taxonomy organizes geographic locations by country, subregion, regional group, and region (continent). Additionally, I have added other regional designations that are commonly used (i.e., Middle East, Scandinavia, Maghreb, Great Britain). The structure is as such (blue terms are modifications of the scheme):

For subject terms, this database uses modified versions of the Library of Congress Subject Headings and Wikidata. Thus, subject terms consist of a main term and then subdivisions. For example, the subject term Maria Montessori – Writings consists of a main subject term Maria Montessori and a subdivision Writings. The main term and the subdivision are separated by a hyphen. This technique is used to allow for more accurate categorization of content.

Subject terms can be names (persons or organizations) and concepts.

This bibliography includes content: by Maria Montessori, about Maria Montessori, about the worldwide Montessori movement, related to the application and implementation of Maria Montessori’s pedagogical techniques and principles, and other related materials. This collection of sources has been built on a solid foundation of bibliographies previously compiled by other individuals and organizations: Mary Maher Boehnlein, Gilbert E. Donahue, Nancy McCormick Rambusch, George L. Stevens, Reginald C. Orem, D. Renee Pendleton, Clara Tornar, Paola Trabalzini, the North American Montessori Teachers’ Association, and the Opera Nazionale Montessori.

The purpose of this bibliography is to improve upon this work by others in two ways: (1) update and add more source content, and (2) provide links to digitized source material when available. In order to update and add more sources, a variety of databases and resources have been consulted: Google ScholarERICGoogle Books, Internet Archive, HathiTrust Digital LibraryJSTORProjectMUSEAfrican Journals OnlineSabinet African JournalsDirectory of Open Access JournalsProQuest databases, EBSCO databases, historic newspaper collections, major academic publishers (SpringerTaylor & FrancisWileyScienceDirectSAGE Journals, and others), academic institutional repositories, archival collections, as well as other digital collections available through libraries and archives worldwide.

Extensive effort has been taken to include links to source materials. Priority has been given to persistent content hosted by well-established institutions. When content is not available through a reliably hosted site, but is available through a less reliable site, a link to the less reliable site has been included. Quality control mechanisms to ensure the persistent stability of these links will be implemented.
