Why is it Important to Learn the Pronunciation with Phonic Sounds?
The capability to decipher words highly depends on children having strong phonological recognition skills that provide a gateway to the knowledge of letter sounds.
Phonetic knowledge enables children to understand the relationship between sounds and patterns of letters. Children understand how sounds represent the alphabet through Phonics. They learn to identify letter sounds and symbols. And, this knowledge helps the children to sound out the words.
The in-depth knowledge of phonics helps the learners to read, write, and spell words at an early age and they gain the confidence to read lessons at a later age.
How to Pronounce the ‘i’ Sound with Examples?
Children find the letter ‘i’ hard to pronounce, but this guide will make it easy. The short vowel sound of the letter ‘i’ is pronounced using the upper part of the mouth. It is important to relax the tongue to not get it confused with its long vowel sound.
The letter ‘i’ is pronounced in 3 ways:
- When we pronounce the letter ‘i’. It produces the long vowel sound, it is pronounced as /ee/. E.g. Taxi. For making this sound the middle front part of the tongue arches. It creates a space between the tongue and the roof of the mouth.
A few other examples of the same sound are jacuzzi, recipe, etc.
- When we pronounce the letter ‘i’. It also produces a long vowel sound of /ai/. e.g. Wide. It uses the back of the mouth to produce this sound lightly touching the bottom teeth.
Other words with the sound of /ai/ are ride, might, white, etc.
- When we pronounce the letter ‘i’. It also produces a short vowel sound of ‘i’ i.e. /ih/. E.g. igloo. To produce the short vowel sound of ‘i’, put the tongue high and at the front of the mouth and stretch out the lips. Some examples of the same are ink, hint, and mint.
This video allows the child to explore the short vowel sound of the English letter ‘I’ and learn words starting with it, such as image, igloo, and insect. The sounds are repeated for each word so that the child can hear and pronounce the letter accurately.
How to Introduce the Sound of the Letter ‘i’ to the Children?
- Invite the child to the table and tell them today we are going to learn the sound of the letter ‘i’ and the words starting with it.
- As shown in the video, show the child how the letter ‘i’ looks like and what is the sound of the letter ‘i’.
- Say it several times by producing the soft consonant sound of the /i/ sound.
- Ask the child to repeat the sound of the letter ‘i’ after you.
- Show the child a picture or miniature of words starting with ‘i’ in the image, igloo, insect, etc.
- Repeat the sound of ‘i’ every time while showing the image of the igloo.
- Now show another picture that starts with ‘i’ and again pronounces the letter ‘i’ sound.
- Encourage the child to make the sound of ‘i’ whenever the picture is shown to them.
