Why is it Important to Learn the Pronunciation Using Phonic Sounds?
It is important for children to study letter-sound relationships because English makes use of letters inside the alphabet to represent sounds. Phonics teaches these records to assist children in learning how to examine and read.
Children at an early age examine the sounds that every letter makes, and how the sound changes when letters are joined together to form words. The pronunciations or sound changes when combined with other consonants or vowels.
Learning how to pronounce also helps them become proficient in reading and writing, as understanding the sounds makes them choose the correct phonograms for spelling. Pronouncing letters correctly is the foundation for breaking down the words and then decoding them to read in a better way with understanding, which is also fruitful for extending vocabulary knowledge.
How to Pronounce ‘e’ Sound with Examples?
The short vowel sound of the letter ‘e’ is a relatively relaxed vowel sound.
It is generally pronounced by the middle of the tongue when rounded slightly upward and the sides of the tongue may lightly touch the top and bottom side teeth. Here, the lips and jaw are loose and relaxed.
The letter ‘e’ is pronounced in 3 ways using its short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds.
- Short vowel sound (/ɛ/): e.g. Wet
The short vowel sound of the letter e sounds like /ɛ/, as in words like egg, check, ten, bed, men, etc.
- Long vowel sound (/i:/): e.g. heat
The long vowel sound of the letter sound is pronounced like /iː/ or /ee/, as in words like eat, we, and meet, teeth, feet, etc.
This video allows the child to explore the short vowel sound of the English letter ‘e’ and learn words starting with it, such as elephant, egg, and eggplant. The sounds are repeated for each word so that the child can hear and pronounce the letter accurately.
How to Introduce the Pronunciation of the ‘e’ Activity to the Child?
- Invite the child to the table and tell them, today we are going to learn the sound of the letter ‘e’ that produces
- Show the child what the letter ‘e’ looks like and the short vowel sound of the letter e.
- Say it several times by producing the /ɛ/ sound as demonstrated in the video.
- Ask the child to repeat the sound after you.
- Show the child a picture or miniature of words starting with e such as egg.
- Repeat the sound of e every time while showing the image of the egg.
- Now show another picture and again produce the letter ‘e’ sound.
- Ask the child to keep pronouncing.
