How To Roll A Rug

This practical life lesson is designed for 1 to 3-year-old children to teach them how to roll a rug or mat and do their daily chores. Rolling and unrolling the rug is one of the preliminary activities children learn in the class. It helps to define a child’s work area and learn through activities.

Benefits of Rug Rolling activity

  1. It helps in strengthening the finger muscles and coordination.
  2. It enables the child to perform their tasks independently and lend a hand in the daily household chores.
  3. It helps in increasing concentration.
  4. It also helps to develop order and hand-eye coordination.
  5. It teaches interdependence and cohesion to the child
  6. It helps in strengthening fine motor and gross motor skills

How to Introduce Rolling a Rug Activity to the Child?

  • Invite the child and tell them, today we are going to learn how to roll a rug
  • Insert the fingers under the rug to roll.
  • Lift the rug upward and make the first fold.
  • Make sure that the fingers are between the open edge and the rolled part of the mat.
  • Start rolling the rug with the fingers, then palms of both hands towards the edge
  • See that the first fold is neither too tight nor too loose.
  • Stop a few times to check that the edges of the rug are even.
  • Continue to roll the mat till the entire rug is rolled.

Repeat this activity as shown in the video. Ask your child to roll a small rug and instill in them a sense of confidence and independence.
