The Stereognostic Bag Activity 3, Identify The Object

This sensorial video lesson, 3rd in the series, is designed for 3-6-year-old children. This lesson is designed to promote the development of the stereognostic sense in children at an early stage.

Using all of the senses is one of the core elements of Montessori pedagogy. According to Dr. Montessori, “sensorial experiences begin at birth.”

Children love playing guessing games. They use their senses to study their environment. With the help of sensorial activities, children absorb and learn information that helps them classify their surrounding environment. It gives the child the ability to adapt to and thrive in that environment.

“It is exactly in the repetition of the exercises that the education of the senses exists; not that the child shall know colors, forms or qualities, but that he refines his senses through an exercise of attention, comparison, and judgment.” The Absorbent mind

Thus, creating an environment in which children learn using more than one sense helps them remain engaged and retain their learning.

What is the Stereognostic Sense and Purpose of the Mystery Bag Activity?

The stereognostic sense is the capability of recognizing an object without seeing, hearing, smelling, or tasting it. It is also known as tactile or kinesthetic sensibility. A prevalent example of using the stereognostic sense is finding and turning off the alarm clock half asleep.

What is a Stereognostic Bag?

The stereognostic bag is also called the mystery bag. It is designed to help children develop their ability to visualize objects using only their sense of touch. Children love this activity because it is both challenging and fun.

Usually, it is simply a non-transparent cloth bag or box with a hole/ opening for the child’s hands, through which they can touch and identify objects without looking at them.

The Mystery Bag is also used to reinforce the geometric solids from the sensorial area in the Montessori classroom.

Benefits of Mystery Bag or Stereognostic Bag Activity

  • It helps children to develop spatial awareness and understand the world around them.
  • It builds visual discrimination to differentiate and categorize between forms, colors, and sizes.
  • It enhances cognitive development by touching and communicating how the object feels (soft, scratchy, smooth, bumpy, etc.).
  • It helps in increasing vocabulary.
  • It helps to train memory and improves concentration.

Materials Required for Identifying the Object in Mystery Bag Activity 3

  • A non-transparent cloth bag
  • Five or more objects of different characteristics

How to Introduce Mystery Bag Activity 3 to a Child?

This Mystery Bag activity is performed by placing a few objects in a cloth bag and then asking the child to feel and identify the objects using their hands.

Before starting the activity, it is advisable to use an eye mask. Then follow the steps as shown in the video:

  1. Place one set of objects on the table and name them one by one.
  2. Place another set of objects in the bag for the child to identify.
  3. Ask the child to put their hand in the bag and hold an object
  4. Ask them to feel its shape and other characteristics and identify a similar object on the table
  5. Take the object out of the bag and check.
  6. Place the object next to its pair.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 with another object.
  8. Encourage the child to try this activity alone
