Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

This video demonstrates the practical way of adding and subtracting fractions. We have used fraction circles in this video to teach addition and subtraction in a way that is very easy to understand.

How do we add or subtract fractions?

To add or subtract fractions, the denominators (the bottom number; think ‘d’ for down) must be the same. Now, start by placing the fraction circles side by side and add a “plus” sign between them. We know that when we add things, we push them together. Once you push them together, count the number of circles you have.

For example, if you have two-fifths and two-fifths, you add the numerators (the top number) and you get four-fifths.

For subtraction, the only difference is that you start out by placing everything together and then you move the number to be subtracted away.

Let your child explore the addition and subtraction of fractions using this practical method for a better understanding.
