Decimal System of Numeration

This video lesson is designed for 3-6-year-old children. It guides through the decimal system of numeration with the help of activities.

What is the Decimal System of Numeration?

The Decimal System of Numeration is the system of numeration based on ‘10’. It is the foundation of which helps to establish order among the numerical quantities.

Decimal Number System:

A decimal number system is also called the Base 10 system.

It consists of 10 digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 and is the most commonly used number system.

The value of a digit in a number depends upon its position in the number. This means the number starts from ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, hundred thousand, and so on. For example, a number 49,873 is read as Forty-nine thousand eight hundred seventy-three.

Dr. Montessori believed that children need to work with concrete materials to understand and internalize abstract concepts in arithmetic.

She developed Montessori materials that help to learn the decimal system in an easy and effective manner.

Examples of Montessori Materials that Simplify Decimal System Concept:

  • Stamp Game Children can easily imbibe the laws of the decimal system using the decimal system static part and the dynamic part material.
  • Golden Bead BarsThe Golden Beads are attractive, concrete, and help introduce abstract concepts in arithmetic.

With these concrete, hands-on materials, children learn to form, read and write large quantities and understand the place value of numbers.

Rules of Decimal System of Numeration

Rule 1: There are only 9 units in a hierarchy

Rule 2: There are only 3 levels in a hierarchy

Rule 3: There are innumerable levels in which the hierarchy repeat themselves

Rule 4: The ratio of a unit in the hierarchy to the unit of the following hierarchy is 1:10

Rule 5: The ratio of level in the hierarchy to the level of the following hierarchy is 1:1000
