This activity is designed for 3-6-year-old children to guide them on creating a collage.
What is a Collage?
Collages are art and craft works that involve selecting, assembling, and pasting materials together.
Collage-making art is a way for young artists to create beautiful works of art by combining many ideas and media. It is a fun-filled activity that allows the child to explore and express themselves artistically.
Collage lessons involve gluing and pasting, as it is an essential art practice that leads to advanced craft skills. A Collage is a kind of visual art that develops spatial awareness. The collage-making in the Montessori education process involves learning the elements and principles of design concepts and arranging different types of materials into beautiful layouts.
What do You Need for Collage Making?
- Paper
- Glue or paste
- Scissors
- A collection of collage items (papers, newspapers, etc.) to cut and paste
- A picture for reference
How to Introduce Collage-Making Activity to the Child?
Making collages is a fun activity that allows young children to experiment, put things together, and create intricately textured artworks with little effort. It promotes children’s creativity, independence, and originality.
As a reference picture, you can choose any picture (In the video, flowers are chosen). Ask the child to arrange the cutouts using newspapers, colored papers, papers, clothes, or any other material of their choice and create a masterpiece of their own.
In this activity, children will get a chance to explore symmetry, patterns, abstract designs, realistic images, and a variety of other art forms, since there are no rules.
Benefits of Teaching Collage Making to the Child
Children can progress from making collages to more complicated crafts and projects that require coordinated movement. Here are some of the major benefits of collaging:
- It helps in building finger and hand strength through the use of scissors
- It helps in enhancing implicit memory through repeated gluing movements and creating unique designs.
- It helps the child to be creative and learn about colors, textures, design, patternmaking, dimension, and composition.
- It helps in building fine motor skills and pincer grasp.
- It helps in language development.
It is exciting to teach children how to arrange pieces of material into composition, whether there is a planned idea or if process-based learning is applied. The possibilities of glue inspire their imaginations and create endless possibilities.
Allow the child to express and explore their inner artist by making a collage of the seasons, flowers, or a holiday greeting card as shown in the video.
