This math lesson is designed for 6 to 12-year-old children. In this lesson, a child will learn what is Montessori stamp game, how it can be prepared at home, and how it is used It demonstrates how to use stamp game printable to perform mathematical operations.
What is a Stamp Game in Montessori?
The Stamp Game is a Montessori maths material used to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations. The stamp game breaks numerals up into single digits, tens, hundreds, and thousands. It consists of colored-coded tiles and skittles that represent quantities. It helps in teaching children mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a more abstract form. Stamps or tiles are used to represent various numerals in the game. The stamps are then manipulated to represent an equation, and the answer is determined by counting them.
Once presented correctly to the child, it is a simple but effective way to learn math concepts at home. It is a hands-on way of learning and practicing mathematical operations of multiple digits.
Stamp Game Materials
The materials used in the Stamp Game are as follows:
- Stamp Game tray (numbered tiles, skittles, and color-coded discs)
- Golden Bead Material (Presentation Tray only, only used for introducing Stamp Game)
- equation slips
- pencil
- equation grid
Prerequisites of Montessori Stamp Game
It is presented to a child after introducing the decimal system using the Montessori Golden Beads.
Control of Error
The different colors of stamps help the child identify the quantities and correct themselves when wrong.
How to Create DIY Stamps for the Montessori Stamp Game?
Prepare your DIY colored stamps by cutting about a 1-inch square each:
- Each stamp of 1 is green marked with ‘1’.
- Each stamp of 10 is blue marked with ’10’.
- Each stamp of 100 is red marked with ‘100’.
- Each stamp of 1000 is green marked with ‘1000’.

How is a Stamp Game Introduced to a Child?
- Invite the child to bring the stamp game material to the table.
- Tell them, today we will learn quantities in the stamp game.
- Show the child each stamp and value associated with it.
- Ask the child if they can identify the stamp and quantity associated with it and tell you what they notice about it. (size, shape, number, color, etc.)
- Show the child how to form a number using colored stamps on a paper or table and read the number. For example, the number 273 is presented as 2 hundred, 7 tens, and 3 units = 273.
- Ask the child how many hundred, tens, and units are there in this number.
- Ask the child to make two numbers using the stamps and read the number.
- Repeat as long as the child needs it.
Extensions of Montessori stamp game activity
- Composing quantities
- Playing the Exchange Game
Repeat this activity by asking the child to print, cut, and form the numbers using the stamps, as shown in the video.

FAQs
- What is the Montessori stamp game?
Montessori stamp game is math material that uses color-coded tiles to represent quantities. It helps the child understand the quantities in more concrete form. It also helps them to learn the place value of the numbers and how numbers are formed.
- How does the stamp game work?
Explain to the child that the units are written in the first column. Columns two contain the tens, columns three contain the hundreds, and column four contains the thousands. For example, to form the number 1682. The child should read the number 1628 as: 8 units, 2 tens, 6 hundreds, and 1 thousand.
