Capital Letters Worksheet: Based on Rule 3
This capital letters worksheet is designed for the 6-12 years children when they are first introduced to sentences.
When children learn to read and write, it is important for them to understand which words to capitalize and why. It helps them to understand and interpret the sentences better. With the help of capitalization and punctuation marks, the whole meaning of sentences changes.
What is Capitalization?
Capitalization is the writing of a word with its first letter in uppercase and the remaining letters in lowercase. It has 7 rules to follow. After comprehending rules 1 and 2 of capitalization, let us understand rule 3.
What is Rule # 3 of Capitalization?
Capitalize days, months, and holidays, but not seasons – the names of days, months, and holidays are considered as proper nouns and hence we follow the capitalization rule while writing them. However, seasons are not proper nouns; hence they do not follow the capitalization rule. For example:
- My birthday is in April
- 14th November is celebrated as Children’s day.
- Rachel will not go to school on Thursday.
- Stacy likes summer the most.
Here, April, Children’s day, and Thursday are names of months, days, and holidays hence are capitalized. Summer is the name of the season and does not need to be capitalized.
Stacy and Rachel are names of persons and are capitalized based on rule #1 of capitalization.
Practicing this capitalization worksheet helps the child understand the right application of rule 3 of capitalization.
How to Practice the Capital Letters Worksheet?
A sentence begins with a capital letter (rule #1). And, the names of days, months and holidays are also capitalized. If there is a name of the season in the sentence, it need not be capitalized (rule #3)
For example – we will go on a picnic on saturday.
Rewrite it as: We will go on a picnic on Saturday.
Another example–leaves fall in autumn.
Rewrite it as Leaves fall in autumn.
When the children would write the complete sentence in the correct format, it would be easier for them to comprehend the capitalization rule.
